What Is Teen Driver’s Ed in New Jersey?
In NJ, a 16-year-old can’t just walk into the MVC for a permit. The state requires 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed driving school before they can get a special learner’s permit — that course is what most families call teen drivers ed. At Drive Up, those 6 hours are private and one-on-one, never shared with other students, and we handle the vision test, permit validation, and road test scheduling so you don’t have to decode the MVC process alone. When the course is complete, you also receive a Certificate of Completion — which many insurance companies accept for a discount on your teen’s coverage.
How Your Teen Gets Licensed in NJ — 4 Steps
Step 1 — The 6-Hour Course. We pick your teen up, teach the required 6 hours one-on-one on real MVC test routes, and handle the vision test and paperwork.
Step 2 — The Special Learner’s Permit. After the course, the permit gets validated and your teen starts supervised practice under NJ’s Graduated Driver License (GDL) program.
Step 3 — The Road Test. We schedule it, run a warm-up on the actual test route, and provide our MVC-approved car.
Step 4 — The Probationary License. Pass, and your teen drives — and if they don’t pass, our Pass Support Guarantee covers the test car free on the retry.
NJ GDL Rules for Teen Permit Holders — Quick Reference
- Practice driving allowed 5:01 AM – 11:00 PM
- Supervised by a licensed adult, 21+, licensed at least 3 years
- One passenger max, unless a parent or guardian is in the car
- Red GDL decals on both plates
- No phones or devices; seatbelts for everyone
- Permit held 6 months + age 17 before the road test
